Going back to our roots
Over the last year or so, it seems Sorted has lost its link to the Irish music scene. Reviews of obscure US bands have been more common than the big name on the Dublin or Cork scene. This isn't what we started out to do, Sorted was always meant to cover what was happening around us as much as what came from far away. I don't take all the blame, though, we can only cover what comes our way and Sorted seemed to drop off the radar for Irish labels. We've now started to address that and hope to bring you far more reviews and, in time, interviews covering Irish bands and artists. The process has started already, with a handful of Irish releases in the latest batch of album reviews, and the return of BPM will bring with it a lot more coverage of the healthy Irish dance scene. And, with our rejuvenated Industry Guide, we've aimed to give a bit of a boost to Irish acts too. So, if you've got something you'd like us to cover, get in touch, send it our way, and help us bring back the Irish element of Sorted magAZine, Ireland's longest running online music magazine.

Going back to our roots (part II)
Some people may have gotten slightly the wrong idea with the first "Going back to our roots" piece. Covering more Irish stuff doesn't in any way mean that we're pushing everything else out. The great thing about the Internet is that, if you've got more content than you expected, there's still room - it's not like you need more paper or airtime. We still plan to feature our broad mix of indie music, slices of the mainstream and our three specialist sections, BPM, Distorted and Sordid. Regular readers may have noticed we're producing stuff more regularly than before, that's because we've more writers, so we have the people to do more Irish stuff as well. Unfortunately, we have no new Irish albums reviewed in the latest batch, so I throw it back out to the Irish industry. Send us more Irish stuff to review and we'll do it. We are already planning to interview more Irish acts as well, and we've launched a new demos section, which isn't restricted to Irish acts, but we hope to get lots of them sending us demos. So that's it, hope that's cleared things up a bit.

After far too long away, we've reintroduced the Sorted Forum. Just look to the right of the screen and you'll find a link. There's three new fora as well, one each for Sordid, Distorted and BPM, linked from the pages in the sections. So, please use them and tell us what you think.

Sorted magAZine still free
As the dot bomb continues to affect Irish websites and many of them start changing users for access to their content, Sorted stands firm in its determination to offer our readers high quality material for absolutely nothing. In the six years since Sorted first appeared online, we have gone from strength to strength with more and more writers producing increasingly varied content and more and more people reading it. But we're not planning to rest on our laurels and we aim to continue to improve our content, particularly BPM, which hasn't yet found its feet, but will do so soon. Sorted will also remain ad-free in the foreseeable future, but some people may have noticed that we've introduced our first record shop affiliation in Sordid. We've done this to help us cover our costs and to help readers get their hands on the material we review. We are interested in affiliations for the other sections as well, so if you've got an online record shop and want to work with us, please get in touch.

Is everyone electric?
Interesting things are happening in the world of electronic music. After over 10 years of fragmentation and division, it's seems the idea of one style of music, covering everything from the oldest sounds of industrial and krautrock to progressive trance and deep house, is gaining ground. Much like the rock scene regularly rediscovers its roots and revives old sounds, two electronic scenes have kicked off this tendency in electronic music. Futurepop, which mixes modern dance with EBM and synthpop, and electroclash, which updates the sounds of electro, synthpop and krautrock, are at the forefront of this tendencies, but their very existence is blurring false boundaries between these similar and related forms of music. It's a great time for open-minded fans, with record companies forging ahead and rereleasing classic cuts like the Cabaret Voltaire and New Order compilations reviewed here (an improvement on the glut of 80s compilations over the summer). Here's hoping there's much more to come.
